The Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis. President Felix Tshisekedi has announced his intention to seek the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers, amidst an extended mandate for a regional peacekeeping force. The eastern part of the country remains unstable, with Tshisekedi accusing Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, a charge Rwanda denies. This region is fraught with conflict as over 120 groups battle for dominance, land, and valuable minerals.

The conflict has led to a staggering number of displaced persons, with the UN migration agency reporting 6.9 million people displaced, indicating one of the largest displacement crises globally. Recent clashes between armed groups and government forces have further displaced more than 450,000 people in North Kivu province's Rutshuru and Masisi territories.

The humanitarian conditions have alarmingly deteriorated, especially in the eastern Congo over the last year and a half. There are 8 million people in need of immediate aid, and there has been a substantial increase in acts of sexual violence against women and girls in the region. The situation continues to be exacerbated by a mix of political, ethnic, and international dynamics, complicating efforts towards peace and stability.
